{"id":1489,"date":"2019-03-18T08:34:51","date_gmt":"2019-03-18T13:34:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ufcw663.org\/blog\/?p=1489"},"modified":"2019-03-19T14:02:04","modified_gmt":"2019-03-19T19:02:04","slug":"drivers-licenses-clears-house-committees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ufcw663.org\/blog\/2019\/03\/18\/drivers-licenses-clears-house-committees\/","title":{"rendered":"Drivers&#8217; Licenses and Public Safety Bill Clears House Committees"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Drivers&#8217; Licenses bill, the License Access and Public Safety Act&#8211;House File 1500, was approved by the MN House of Representatives Government Operations committee on March 13, 2019.<\/p>\n<p>The Gov Ops committee was welcomed by a packed hearing room full of supporters for drivers&#8217; licenses for all Minnesotans including UFCW 663 members. Powerful testimonies in support were given from law enforcement and public safety officials from the cities of St. Paul and Minneapolis, milk producers from rural MN, faith leaders, and community supporters of Latino and African descent.<\/p>\n<p>This was the fifth and final committee the proposed legislation in the MN House of Representatives.<\/p>\n<h4>Since February<\/h4>\n<p>All of the following committees passed the bill:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Transportation on February 28<\/li>\n<li>Judiciary on\u00a0March 4<\/li>\n<li>Ways and Means on\u00a0March 5<\/li>\n<li>Subcommittee on Elections on\u00a0March 8<\/li>\n<li>Government Operations on\u00a0March 13<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>UFCW Local 663<\/strong> and Freedom to Drive coalition partners filled each of the committee rooms and packed overflow rooms with community members in support of the bill. In fact, this issue has brought the most Minnesotans to committee hearings at the Capitol this year.<\/p>\n<h4>Next Steps<\/h4>\n<p>The bill will be up for debate in the coming weeks at the Capitol. House File 1500\u2019s next step is to heard by the entire House of Representatives. This is also known as the bill will be \u201cheard on the floor\u201d where it will go through a democratic question and answer discussion and debate, then be voted on.<\/p>\n<p>Right now, there is no set schedule for when the bill will be up for debate. Typically, though, this happens rather quickly, with just a few days turnaround.<\/p>\n<h4>UFCW 663 Will Be There!<\/h4>\n<p>UFCW 663 will show our support by joining together in coalition for the bill.
