Minnesota\u2019s Largest Meatpacking Union Urges JBS to\nFollow CDC Guidelines to Protect Workers and Food Supply<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

BROOKLYN\nCENTER, MN \u2013 <\/strong>Today, United Food and\nCommercial Workers (UFCW) Local 663 President Matt Utecht called on JBS in\nWorthington to enact proper safety and testing standards before reopening,\nincluding: (1) daily worker testing and temperature checks, (2) priority access\nto PPE for all workers in plant, (3) safe line speeds to ensure social\ndistancing and (4) isolating workers with symptoms or positive COVID-19 tests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These guidelines<\/a> for safely operating a meatpacking plant were recently\nrecommended by the CDC. UFCW Local 663 represents over 1850 workers at the JBS plant\nin Worthington, which is the largest pork production facility in Minnesota.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

UFCW Local 663 President\nMatt Utecht<\/strong> released the following\nstatement:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are urging JBS and\nother companies to install the highest possible worker safety and testing\nstandards when they reopen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis needs to be a\ncollaborative effort with workers who are the heart and soul of our union,\ngovernment and JBS executives that moves us to the safe reopening of JBS\nWorthington plant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur food supply will\nremain at risk until every worker who makes pork and other proteins can go to\nwork without facing an increased chance of contracting COVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe must ensure every\nworker at JBS and other plants is working in a place that has PPE, social\ndistancing and regular testing. These are tried and trusted ways to stop the\ncontinued spread of this deadly virus. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe CDC recently released\nguidelines to keep meatpacking plants and the workers inside them safe from\ninfection. These recommendations are supported by health care experts and\nshould be followed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe stand ready to help\nJBS implement these guidelines to ensure that we keep essential meat processing\nworkers safe and our country\u2019s food supply secure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
