Brooklyn Center, MN–Statement from UFCW Local 663 President Matt Utecht following the announcement by UFCW of a major victory for workers in America’s pork industry, with a federal district court in Minneapolis ruling that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) acted unlawfully when it eliminated limits on the speeds at which plants run their slaughter lines, without considering the increased risk of injury to plant workers.
“This is a powerful victory for the health and safety for all pork processing workers in Minnesota who have been on the frontlines of COVID-19 helping our families put food on the table this past year. Thanks to this federal court ruling, the USDA will no longer allow pork plants to operate at dangerous speeds that put workers at risk and threaten our food safety.
“It took a worldwide pandemic to pull back the curtain and show the public the dangers of the meatpacking industry, and this victory helps ensure we never go back to the days of corporate profits coming before worker safety.
“As the union for 16,000 thousand Minnesota meatpacking workers, UFCW Local 663 will continue to fight for the health and safety of our country’s essential food workers — both union and non-union — here and throughout the Midwest.”

Brooklyn Center, MN – Declaración del Presidente de UFCW Local 663 Matt Utecht luego del anuncio de UFCW sobre una gran victoria para los trabajadores de la industria porcina de Estados Unidos, con un tribunal de distrito federal en Minneapolis que dictaminó que el Departamento de Agricultura de los Estados Unidos (USDA) actuó ilegalmente cuando eliminó los límites a la velocidad a la que las plantas ejecutan sus líneas de matanza, sin considerar el mayor riesgo de lesiones para los trabajadores de la planta.
“Esta es una victoria poderosa para la salud y la seguridad de todos los trabajadores del procesamiento de carne de cerdo en Minnesota que han estado al frente de COVID-19 ayudando a nuestras familias a poner comida en la mesa el año pasado. Gracias a este fallo de la corte federal, el USDA ya no permitirá que las plantas de carne de cerdo operen a velocidades peligrosas que pongan a los trabajadores en riesgo y amenacen nuestra seguridad alimentaria.
